What makes it so challenging?

Well, the concept is to escape. The participants must, by overcoming various obstacles, try to reach the finish. Courage, commitment, dare and a basic condition are just some of the requirements that we expect from our participants. Knowledge of how to take the obstacles is totally not required. The competition is about team spirit and courage to overcome obstacles together…

Discover our concept:

Obstacle Run is the quickest growing sport in the world. Over Belgium several running events have been organized with almost every time maximum registrations. With this kind of Belgian sports event we often find different nationalities. One thing is sure: Obstacle Runs are very popular in Belgium. What is important, is that there is a difference between survival run and an obstacle run. A survival run is a running trail with highly technical obstacles which require knowledge and training. An obstacle run on the other hand is approachable. Where with enough commitment and motivation you can reach the finish line, without the need for any prior knowledge of the art, in order to overcome the obstacles is needed. Only in the competition there are some technical obstacles, but whoever want to the best must be prepared to work hard 😉

The location

Recreational domain Blaarmeersen, Zuiderlaan 5, 9000 Ghent. Entrance of the domain is in-between Top sports hall ‘Vlaanderen’ and ‘huis van de sport’.

To get to the meeting place, it’s best you come by foot or by bicycle. Public transport is also an option: http://gent.delijn.be/ . In case you come by car, park along the ‘watersportbaan’. The recreational domein asks €3.5 parking fee. We can’t do anything about this.

Recreational domein Blaarmeersen
Zuiderlaan 5

The terrain is easy to reach with public transport. It is within walking distance of Sint-Pieters station and the center of Ghent. There are 5 bus lines to the domain.

De Lijn

There are 5 busses that will arrive on the recreation park:

With the train:

Whoever is coming with the train needs to watch out that they get off Ghent Sint Pieters and not Ghent Dampoort. Since the station is within walking distance, you can come by foot or even at a jog. This way you are already warmed up and ready to start.

If you still want to take the bus:

  • Bus line 41  Merelbeke Kwenenbos – Ghent Blaarmeersen

By car:

For those who wish to come by car, we strongly recommend you DO NOT park on the site of the recreation park Blaarmeersen. You don’t want your car to become an obstacle. The course takes place on the entire domain and therefore crosses many access roads and car parks. You’re all sports minded and at the Watersportbaan there is enough parking available. Only when this parking is fully booked we will provide other parking spaces. The parking’s will be indicated.

Administration

Here are some guidelines to help your possible escape run smoothly.

Check this information again a few days before the competition.

It’s best that you register early at the secretary so that you receive your items on time (Chip, 2 wrist bands, baggage label …) so that you can relax.

The secretary is open as of 08h00

You sign in with your identity card, ‘Appendix A’ and your discount code (if needed) at the secretary. There you will receive an envelope. In this envelope you can find the program book (including a course map), your participant band, your 2 wrist bands (if competitive), your chip and baggage label.

If you’re entered competitively then your ID card will be exchanged for a numbered t-shirt that you must give back after the competition, and then you will get your ID card back.

You need to register on time.

Appendix A will be sent via mail two weeks before the competition. Make sure to check that your name is noted in the list ‘2017’ where you can find all the entered participants.

The wrist band will be closed with pincers. We will for see multiple. This wrist band will also have your number. If you do not have a wrist band you will be removed from the competition. If it would tear you will get a new one, of course only after verification of your identity.

The chips will be fixed to the shoe laces, at the finish these must be returned. The price of a chip is €25 if you lose it. Fix it good!!!

Hang the baggage label on your bag that you wish to leave behind at the baggage drop.

There are changing rooms foreseen and afterwards you can shower for FREE. Before showering we request you to rinse your clothes at the foreseen water points! The showers are free and we wish to keep it that way in the upcoming editions…

Foresee clothes that can get wet and dirty. The ideal clothing is: old (running) shoes, stretch trousers (trousers that don’t get heavy when wet) and a t-shirt. It is mandatory that shoes are kept on.

There will also be a tent where you baggage will be guarded for FREE. You can leave your baggage here. The organization is not responsible for damage and theft.

The toilets are FREE. Participants and spectators DO NOT have to pay.

The Run

On the course there will be enough arrows and ribbons placed:
Ribbons: Police, Decathlon, the Great Escape
Arrows: wooden arrows, run2escape arrows.
At the secretary it will be clearly noted what you need to follow.

The course will pass 3 times (for the ½ marathon even 6 times) near the event field.

On the event field there will be food and drink stands at very reasonable prices.

Also the last 500m will pass along the water and the beach. This is ideal to cheer for you partner, friend, family … in their last 500m.

The more entries, the more obstacles!
The first edition there were 26 obstacles, the second edition 32 obstacles, the third edition there were for the recreational competition 38 obstacles and the competition itself 42!

IMPORTANT for ‘The Great Escape Original’ (recreational competition): the time registration only starts AFTER the first obstacle. There is 20 min between each wave. With other words after the start signal you do not need to push to take the first obstacle, this has no added value!

IMPORTANT for ‘The Great Escape ½ marathon’: the time registration only starts AFTER the first obstacle. With other words after the start signal you do not need to push to take the first obstacle, this has no added value! You will do ‘The Great Escape’ course twice = minimum 60 obstacles.

IMPORTANT for ‘The Great Escape Competition’ (OCR Belgium’s Open Championship)

Pay attention: The start is according to number. Every 10 seconds a runner will start according to their number. So number 0100 will start at exactly 10h, number 0101 at exactly 10h00min10sec, etc. So pushing makes no sense. Marshalls will ensure that you also enter the start box in an orderly manner and are standing in order of your number.
If you missed your time slot, then you can, if the time allows it, join at the back of the que.
This also works in reverse: Each time someone misses their time slot, the start time will be advanced 10sec…
More information regarding the operation of the competition you can read in the regulations.
At the finish you will receive your medal and a refreshment.
At 13h45 the awards for both ‘The Great Escape Team Competition’ and ‘OCR Belgium’s Open Championship’ will be given.
If this timing cannot be met because of conditions, this will be at 16h00.

IMPORTANT for ‘The Great Escape Team Competition’

Pay attention: The start is according to team number. Every 2 minutes 1 team will start on number sequence. The first start is foreseen at 12h00.

So there’s no need in pushing. Marshalls will ensure that you also enter the start box in an orderly manner and are standing in order of your number.
If you missed your time slot, then you can, if the time allows it, join at the back of the que.
This also works in reverse: Each time someone misses their time slot, the start time will be advanced 12min…
You must be with 8 team mates at the start!
The team leader will receive a numbered t-shirt.
More information regarding the operation of the competition you can read in the regulations.
At the finish you will receive your medal and a refreshment.
At 13h45 the awards for both ‘The Great Escape Team Competition’ and ‘OCR Belgium’s Open Championship’ will be given.
If this timing cannot be met because of conditions, this will be at 16h00

Good luck!
